Merengue & Bachata

Merengue has been part of the Dominican Republic’s cultural identity for over a century and is part of our history. It has Spanish, African, and indigenous influences, and its lyrics narrate the daily life in our country. Bachata is another Dominican rhythm known worldwide, and an example of how Dominican music has transcended borders and broken language barriers to be heard around the globe.
Merengue and Bachata music and dance were both declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2016 and 2019 respectively, making them cultural traditions that will be part of the country’s legacy for future generations.
Many venues, festivals and concerts bring Dominican music to life, allowing people from all ages to come together and experience the joy of dancing to these lively rhythms.
